Judging the first ever “Can You Aerial” Competition
Judging the First-Ever "Can You Aerial" Competition at Can You Dance 2024
October 12th 2024, the vibrant world of dance took flight with the inaugural "Can You Aerial" competition at the beloved Can You Dance Super Convention in Liverpool. As a judge at this groundbreaking event, I had the incredible opportunity to witness a thrilling display of talent, creativity, and pure passion for aerial. Here’s a glimpse into the experience and what made this competition truly special.
Setting the Stage
The atmosphere was electric as performers from diverse backgrounds gathered to showcase their skills. The venue, set up by Showtime Circus, set the perfect backdrop for aerial performances that promised to captivate audiences. Aerial hoop and silks, which combines elements of acrobatics and choreography while suspended in the air, is a unique art form that demands not only physical strength but also artistic expression.
The Performers
The competitors ranged from seasoned aerialists to up-and-coming talents. Each act brought a unique flavour, incorporating floor work, hoop and silks. It was exhilarating to see how each performer incorporated their own themes into their performances. From graceful, flowing movements to jaw-dropping stunts, the creativity on display was nothing short of inspiring.
The Judges
What I was looking for…
“As a judge with a background in both dance and gymnastics, I appreciate the multifaceted nature of an aerial performance. I will be looking for strength and stability and the ability to show smooth transitions. Precision in the movements shown. Including fully stretched feet, extended legs and clean lines. Musicality and performance shown throughout the performance. I want to be captivated by the performance and I’d like to see a connection with the audience.”
The 2nd judge was Abbie Mason from FPS Fitness in Birmingham and she was looking for…
“Hello, I’m Abbie, a former competitive rhythmic gymnast and current professional circus artist. My background in gymnastics has given me a deep appreciation for the technical and artistic aspects of performance, a sentiment which I carry into my own work within circus arts. I am a firm believer in having a good time on stage and I love to see a performer embody the feeling of their act, fully immersed in their character to fill it with style and panache. The simplest of tricks executed with intention and flair can make a routine stand out!”
Memorable Moments
Several performances left a lasting impression. One standout act used silks to tell a poignant story of transformation, intertwining intricate moves with fluid transitions that mirrored the emotional journey of the character. Another performance showcased stunning strength, with breathtaking drops and catches that had the audience gasping in awe.
The camaraderie among competitors was also heartwarming. Despite the competitive atmosphere, many performers cheered for one another, showcasing the supportive spirit that permeates the dance community.
Looking Ahead
The first-ever "Can You Aerial" competition was a resounding success, paving the way for future events that celebrate this captivating art form. As a judge, I felt honored to be part of this milestone moment in the dance community.
I left the event not only inspired by the incredible talent but also excited to see how aerial dance continues to evolve and flourish. Here’s to many more competitions, innovative performances, and the ever-expanding world of aerial artistry!
